Heinrich Daniel Theodor Spangenberg (1764-1806), painter born in Jena, pupil of Johann Heinrich Tischbein in Kassel, court painter in Gotha from 1792/93. Large Italian landscape in the evening light with bustling activity at the watering place. In the shadow of an ancient ruined vault, numerous shepherds with cattle, travelers, pilgrims and washerwomen gather at a spring against the backdrop of a vast landscape. The finely painted and naturalistically executed scene is peppered with details such as a pissing horse, the rich headdress of a mule and stray dogs, thus elevating it beyond the status of mere staffage. Oil/canvas, signed and dated ”Spangenberg 1788” in the lower margin, relined, restored and partially retouched, 104 x 123 cm, framed 120 x 139 cm
