Rudolf Tewes. 1879 – Bremen – 1965. Summer landscape near Malaga. 1916. oil on canvas, signed and dated Tewes 1916 lower right, verso inscribed verni á l’ombre de Blockx [Amber varnish] as well as location, date and provenance information, 32 x 46 cm, framed 40 x 54.5 cm. Provenance: Gift of the artist to Theodor Hoffmann (Bremer Kunsthalle) in 1949 – The painting, in which the influence of the French Impressionists is unmistakable, was created during his extended stay in Spain, where he spent the first years of the First World War with his wife’s family until he returned to Paris in 1919.
