Gottfried Menken. 1799 – Bremen – 1838 Two Bremen hunters with Cossacks in front of Bremen. Oil on panel, signed G. Mnk. lower left and inscribed and dated Gottfried Menken Bremen 1813 on artist’s name plaque, 43.5 x 54.5 cm, framed in a magnificent frame 66 x 78 cm – During the French occupation, the Russian-Prussian troops also included allied Cossack units, which were the first troops to arrive in French-occupied northern Germany in 1813 and triggered a popular uprising against the French occupiers with their patrol corps. In addition to the Cossacks, the Hanseatic Legion that formed during this period also included the Bremen Volunteer Jäger Corps (”Böse’sche Jäger”) at the end of 1813, which took part in two campaigns against Napoleon in 1814/15.
