Bowl from the Gatchina Palace Service, Imperial Manufactory St. Petersburg, period Tsar Nicholas II (1894-1917), 1900, in the center the double-headed eagle with the coat of arms of St. George, polychrome painted. George, polychrome painted and ornamentally gilded, Ø 14 cm, This service with a version of the double-headed eagle on the imperial state seal, which was used after the Napoleonic Wars, was commissioned in 1820 and described in archive inventories as a ”service with the coat of arms and a golden band”. The service was added to several times and moved to the Gatchina Palace around 1855, where it became known as the Gatchina Service. The Gatchina Palace served as the main residence of the imperial family during the reign of Tsar Alexander III (reigned 1881-1894) and then his widow, the Dowager Tsarina Maria Feodorovna. The service was frequently used and further additions were ordered during the reign of Nicholas II (1894-1917). Lit.: T.N. Nosovich & I.P.
