Large gold medal, Bulgaria, probably previously unknown unique specimen. Struck on the occasion of the construction of the railway line between Yambol and Burgas on May 14, 1890. Av portrait of Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria with inscription, under the portrait die-cutter’s signature ”J.SCHWERDTNER”. Rv Locomotive on bridge with inscription and date May 14, 1890, designed by Joseph C. Christlbauer. Stamped twice on the edge, once ”J P” and once bird (?) in pentagon. This medal with a diameter of 5 cm is known to date only in bronze gilt or silver rubies. Also known is an example in gold with a diameter of 9 cm (Künker A. 395, lot 323, hammer price at _ 170,000). Gold tested .965. Weight 62.85 g. Diameter 5 cm. Excellent. RRR
