Rudolf Gudden (1863-1935), ”Sitting Woman in the Garden”, oil on canvas, c. 1915, signed lower right. Gudden was born in Werneck Castle near Schweinfurt as one of nine children of the famous psychiatrist and neurologist Bernhard von Gudden, who was the director of the mental hospital there. His father was instrumental in the deposition of Ludwig II, as he had written the expert opinion that formed the official justification for the king’s incapacitation. Together with Ludwig II, he drowned in Lake Starnberg in 1886 under circumstances that remain unexplained to this day. Rudolf Gudden had studied at the Munich and Karlsruhe academies and finally settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1888, where he co-founded the Frankfurt-Cronberg Artists’ Association in 1906. 70.0 cm x 59.5 cm, framed 82 x 74 cm
