Berend Jakob Govers (1843-1917), Captain’s painting of the steamer Sonnenburg on the Rio de la Plata, 1907, oil/canvas, signed and dated B. J. Govers 1907 lower right, 64 x 99 cm, restored and retouched, framed 82 x 117 cm. Built in 1896 in Newcastle-on-Tyne for the Deutsche Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa, the Sonnenburg served the Hansa Line on the Rio de La Plata, the bay of the Atlantic Ocean between Uruguay and Argentina, into which the rivers Uruguay and Paraná flow. The prominent mountain appears to be modeled on the Dedo de Deus (Finger of God), which is located near Teresopolis in Rio de Janeiro.
