Vase, Paris, France, 19th century, signed, Narcisse Vivien, a cardinal bird on a blossoming fruit branch, on a silver ground, ornamental gilding, rubbed, h. 24.5 cm, similar examples were created and exhibited for the 1878 Universal Exhibition, very much in the style of Japonism of the time. Narcisse Vivien, an animal painter specializing in birds and professor at the Ecole de Bernard Palissy, was active between 1875 and 1900. Some of his vases with birds on a platinum background were exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878. He also took part in the Salon des Artistes français in 1886.
