Levefre, L. French landscape painter of the late 19th c. Landscape with former artillery position near Le Raincy. 1875. oil/wood, lower left monogrammed a. dated LV (ligated), verso inscribed a. dated Emplacement des batterles au Raincy 1875, 27,5 x 46 cm, on frame plaque inscribed L. Levefre, framed 37 x 55,5 cm.- During the Battle of Le Bourget between the Prussian Army and the Parisian Defense Army during the Franco-Prussian War, at the end of 1870, Prussian units dug strong fortifications on the strategically favorable elevations of Le Raincy, east of Paris, in order to take the fortress of Rosny on Mont d’Avron under fire from there with over 70 guns. On the painting this fortification can still be seen as a ditch.
