Govers, Berend Jakob. 1843 – Leer – 1917. captain’s picture of the steamer Sonnenburg on the Rio de la Plata. 1907. oil/canvas, bottom right signed a. dated B. J. Govers 1907, 64 x 99 cm, restored a. retouched, framed 82 x 117 cm.- The Sonnenburg, built in 1896 in Newcastle-on-Tyne for the German Steamship Company Hansa, served the Hansa Line on the Rio de La Plata, the sea bay of the Atlantic Ocean between Uruguay and Argentina, into which the rivers Uruguay and Paraná flow. The prominent mountain appears to be modeled after the Dedo de Deus (Finger of God), located near Teresopolis in Rio de Janeiro. In 1909 the Sonnenburg was sold to Belgium (Tunisie), in 1927 to Italy (Cosmo) and demolished in 1934.
