Anonymous, probably Chinese marine painter of the early 20th c. Captain’s picture of the coastal steamship Manila. Oil/canvas on hardboard, illegibly signed lower right, 30.5 x 43.5 cm, framed 35 x 49 cm. – Built in 1904 by the Rickers shipyard in Geestemünde, the Manila was acquired by Norddeutscher Lloyd by the end of 1907 and served from 1909-1914 on the mail-ship branch line SIngapur-Batavia-Makassar-Amboina to the German protectorates of New Guinea. In 1919, she went to England as reparations and was sold to China in 1922 and renamed Sinang Lee, later Heng Cong, and demolished in 1928.
