In lucid colours and an open alternation between abstract forms and real recognisable motifs, this work takes up a theme that is characteristic of the artist’s work in several ways – on the one hand, it shows an ‘en-face’ portrait of a man and, on the other, the hat and musical instrument identify the sitter as belonging to the ranks of musicians and vaudeville artists who frequently appear in Keil’s oeuvre and often embody a cheerful, non-conformist world of longing.
Mixed media on cotton fabric, 50 x 80 cm, 1995. Shown in the catalogue raisonné under the number WVZ 3064. Prior to the auction, the work was freshly framed at the specialist dealer Boesner by one of the few expert and fully trained picture framers. In a multi-stage matching process, special emphasis was placed on the coherence between the work and the frame.
