South German painter c. 1750, portrait of a French hussar officer compiling a billeting list in Swabia during the War of the Austrian Succession. Historically significant portrait of a high-ranking officer, who is probably the Mestre des Camp Chevalier Zigmond David of the 2e régiment de hussards. On a red armchair, the officer is drawing up a list of billeting expenses: ”quartier d’hiver de Souabe Fl. 73426” (winter quarters in Swabia 73426 guilders). Behind him stands a man in a dark brown jacket as a representative of the Swabian region, thoughtfully clutching his head at the exorbitant sum that is difficult to raise. Oil/canvas, unsigned, relined, restored and retouched, 96 x 96 cm, framed 110 x 110 cm
