An important lidded cup and saucer, Meissen, Marcolini mark with numeral 4, 1st choice, c. 1778. Choice, c. 1778, bulbous cup with square handle, domed lid and molded saucer, two finely painted portraits in medallions on the sides, Camillo Count Marcolini and his wife Maria Anna Baroness O’Kelly, From 1774 to 1814 he was director of the Meissen porcelain manufactory and made a career with the king up to cabinet minister, the saucer with two figures languishing before the flaming altar of Hymen, inscribed ‘L’Amitié nous unit’, within a similar cartouche, framed by gilded ovolo borders with bows and ivy tendrils, cobalt blue ground, restored rose lid, h. 10 cm, the base with label ‘Colecao Jorge Geturio Vega, Rio’
